Event : West Coast Weekender: Ready for Round 2 in San Diego!
Story By Jim Tremayne | April 20, 2017
San Diego – West Coast Weekender returns for its second edition May 4-7 in the coastal city of San Diego. Last year’s inaugural event attracted over 1,200 people from across the country. In October, New York-raised DJ/producer MANIK described the event: “West Coast Weekender brought in the brand-new with the old-school. The crowd was so diverse; it was true house music. The vibes were insanely good and I loved every minute of it.” DJ/producer Rich Medina says, “West Coast Weekender is one of, if not THE most engaging and comprehensive music event in America. Hands down, it’s a breath of fresh air with a recipe for DJs, fans, and industry types to want to come back over and over again.”
In 2016, the event established itself as more than just a set of day-to-night parties. As a full-fledged conference, attendees and artists came together at San Diego’s Four Points Sheraton Downtown for provocative discussions on beat-making and community-specific topics before heading to the day’s festivities. This year, the WCW team is doubling down on panels and workshops. From panels about social activism to limited-seating workshops on Ableton Live, there are educational opportunities for everyone.
Once again, DJ Times will serve as media sponsor and, on May 6, DJ Times editor Jim Tremayne will moderate “The Art of the Remix/The Last 30 Years,” a panel that will dive deep. With panelists that include Marques Wyatt, Manoo, Mr. V, Jask, Matthew Brian, David Montoya, Davidson Ospina and Asya Shein, “The Art of the Remix” will discuss the art and science of remixing, its origins and evolution, plus its craft and relevance in the modern context.
The Lineup: DJ talent for 2017 will include Mark Farina, LTJ Bukem, Oliver Dollar, Purple Disco Machine, Marques Wyatt, Walker & Royce, Matrix & Futurebound, Enei, Manik, Sunshine Jones, Manoo, Mr. V, Rich Medina, Julius tMt, Lars Behrenroth, Jask, Doza, Jamal, Method One, Mark Quark, Cris Herrera, Greg Eversoul, Eric Medina, Garva, MC Ridda, Adam Gibbons, Antonio Manigrassi, David Montoya, Eric Groove, Diaztek, Ryan Bauer, Jayvi Velasco, Marshall Jones, Bass Exotic, Bumpy Nuggets, Nimbus, Olga Arteaga, Rani “G”, David Sabat, Chris Liosi, Terri Lee, Lillian So, & BigDaddyDoug.

Strictly Rhythm announce 900th single Kenny Dope and Roland Clark team up on landmark release
'Talk Dirty' will be available on 28 April
Veteran New York house label Strictly Rhythm will reach yet another milestone later this month when they drop their 900th single release.
Set up by Mark Finkelstein and Gladys Pizarro in 1989 - the first release being Tylon's Feel The Rhythm Of House - Strictly Rhythm is without doubt one the most revered labels in dance music history, having played a key role in launching the careers of DJs, artists and producers such as Masters At Work, Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo, Armand Van Helden, Barbara Tucker, Ultra Nate, Josh Wink and many more. The label closed its doors in 2002, but was relaunched in a partnership with Defected Records in 2007 before becoming fully independent again a few years later.
For this landmark release, they've drafted in the services of two producers whose careers are as long-lived as the label itself - Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez and Roland Clark. The result is SR12900, or Talk Dirty - a lively little house chugger featuring a throbbing b-line, vaguely Latin-tinged, shuffly beats from Kenny and a mildy smutty spoken vocal from Clark.
The single's out on 28 April.
